Summary

  • Anthropic is running a promotion from October 1 to 15 under which work that follows creating or editing an artifact in Claude uses 50% less of the five-hour session limit.
  • In chats, the next 10 messages and the first 15 steps of each reply are discounted; cloud Cowork tasks get about the first 45 minutes or up to 80 steps, and the weekly limit does not change.
  • It applies automatically to Pro, Max and Team plans, while Free and Enterprise plans, Claude Code, the API and the standalone Claude Design app are excluded.

Anthropic on October 1 (Pacific time) started a usage promotion under which work that follows creating or editing an artifact in the Claude app, such as a doc, slide deck or design, uses only half as much of the five-hour session limit. The offer runs for about two weeks, from 11:00 a.m. on October 1 through 11:59 p.m. on October 15, Pacific time. It covers Pro, Max and Team plans; Free and Enterprise plans are left out. No code or setting is needed, and the discount applies automatically to eligible accounts.

Anthropic announced on its official X account that "for two weeks, start a design, deck, or doc in the Claude app, and the work that follows in that conversation uses 50% less of your usage limits." It added "give it a try with Claude Sonnet 5.5," saying the model "has a strong eye for design and builds slides that need minimal editing." The post passed 1 million views in less than a day and drew more than 6,700 likes. METAL reported the launch of Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, and the promotion began three days later.

The discount is narrower than it sounds. According to the promotion terms on Anthropic's official help center, which METAL reviewed, only the next 10 messages in a chat after Claude creates or edits an artifact are discounted. From the 11th message the standard rate returns, and the count only restarts when Claude creates or edits an artifact in that chat again. There is also a cap within a single reply. When Claude works through steps such as a search, a tool call or an artifact update, only the first 15 steps of each reply can be discounted, and any further steps count at the standard rate.

How a chat starts also decides how the first message is treated. Opening a new chat by choosing Document, Presentation or Design from the Output menu applies the discount from the first message. Asking for an artifact partway through an ordinary chat means the message in which Claude first creates the artifact counts at the standard rate, and the following 10 messages are discounted. For anyone planning to iterate on the same deck, starting from the Output menu is worth one extra discounted message.

Claude Cowork follows a different formula. The discount applies only to Cowork tasks running in the cloud, not to tasks that run locally in Claude Desktop. Starting a task by choosing Document, Presentation or Design from the Output menu discounts about the first 45 minutes, while creating or editing an artifact in any other cloud task discounts up to the next 80 steps. Tasks moved into a Workspace follow the same rules, and creating or editing another artifact restarts the discount.

The weekly limit is the point most often misunderstood. The terms state plainly that "this promotion reduces the usage counted toward your five-hour session limit by 50% and doesn't change your weekly usage limit." A community note on X added the same clarification beneath the official post, noting that the discount applies only to the five-hour session limit and leaves the weekly limit as it is. For users who have turned on usage credits, any message that draws on those credits is billed at the standard rate. In plain arithmetic, 10 discounted messages equal five standard ones, and that is the saving each artifact creation or edit earns.

The exclusion list is longer than the eligibility list. Claude Code, the Claude API, Claude in Slack, scheduled and unattended tasks, artifacts made with the earlier version of artifacts, and Google Docs, Sheets or Slides made through the Google Drive connector are all excluded. Work in the standalone Claude Design app is not discounted either, including projects published as artifacts from that app. Designs made by choosing Design from the Output menu in a chat or a Cowork task are included. The terms say the offer has no cash value, is not transferable, and may be changed or ended early by Anthropic.

The promotion rests on the artifact system Anthropic overhauled in September. METAL reported that Anthropic merged Claude Cowork and chat into one and introduced Docs and Slides. According to the artifacts help page, an artifact is anything Claude makes that you would put in front of someone, such as a design, a deck, a document, a dashboard or a small interactive tool, and it opens beside the conversation where it can be edited, revisited and shared. Artifacts made in a chat before September 16 are classified as legacy artifacts; they keep working, but new ones can no longer be made.

The plan split for templates overlaps with the promotion's eligibility. The Claude Design, Slides and Docs templates are a beta for paid plans only, switched on by default for Pro, Max and Team, while on Enterprise plans they stay off until an owner turns each one on. Docs export to Word, PDF, Markdown and Google Docs, decks to PowerPoint and PDF, and designs to a .zip, PDF, PowerPoint or standalone HTML. Artifact data storage accepts text only, up to 20 MB per artifact.

Seen through a content marketer's lens, the promotion is not a price cut but a design for changing habits. Because the discount never appears on a bill, users can only see it on their session meter, and the way to get the most from it is to start from the Output menu with a document, presentation or design. Leaving out Claude Code and the API where developers spend their time, leaving out the standalone design app, and keeping only artifacts made inside conversations reveals that intent. In return for easing usage worries for two weeks, Anthropic is trying to move the first screen of everyday work from a blank chat box to the Output menu of documents and decks.
