AI company Anthropic has opened Claude Startups, its program for founders building companies on Claude, to more startups. Announcing the expansion on October 6, the company said approved members receive a free year of the Claude Team plan, $1,000 in API credits, discounts on partner tools, and office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team. The company values the Claude product and credit benefits at up to $7,000. Startups founded within the last five years or funded within the last two are eligible.
The $7,000 breaks down into two parts. Companies new to Claude Team get up to five Premium seats free for a year. Anthropic counted that portion as $6,000, based on $100 per seat per month billed annually. On top of that comes a one-time API credit of $1,000, available as soon as a company is approved. The credit expires six months after it is issued and can be used only on Anthropic's first-party API through Claude Console. It cannot be used on third-party platforms such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI, and members who receive credits automatically get higher API rate limits.
The new addition is the Claude Startup Stack. Companies that make sales, design, data, meeting, and engineering tools are offering discounts and credits worth up to $45,000. The program page, which METAL reviewed, lists offers such as $5,000 in ClickHouse Cloud credits, 12 months free plus 33 million characters from ElevenLabs, six months free on Hex's Enterprise plan, three months of Granola's Business plan free for up to 10 seats, and 25% off the first year of Gamma Pro annual. Anthropic said the offers are provided by independent third-party companies, that the maximum is based on partner list prices as of September 2026, and that companies may not be able to receive or combine all offers.
Support beyond money is bundled in as well. Members can book 45-minute virtual office hours with the Applied AI team every other week. Anthropic helps members build and submit listings for Claude Marketplace, where Claude users find connectors and plugins. Members also get access to events such as Founder House, hackathons, and meetups, along with a startup newsletter. Anthropic is hosting a Claude Founder House in San Francisco from October 6 to 8, during SF Tech Week. METAL has previously reported that Anthropic would hold Founder House in two cities.
The bar to entry is set low. Bootstrapped, pre-seed, and venture-backed companies can all apply. Applicants need a Claude Console account, a company email matching the company website's domain, and a short description of what they are building. The company said most applications are decided within minutes, while the rest go to manual review that usually takes two to three business days. Companies backed by a venture capital firm in Anthropic's partner network can receive up to $100,000 in additional API credits through that investor.
The program first opened this year. According to reports, it launched in May and already counts thousands of participating companies. "We created this program because we believe the benefits of AI will reach most people through the companies that build on top of models, rather than through the models alone," Anthropic said in its announcement. "Claude gets meaningfully more capable every few months, and a company built for what's coming can put our models to use the day they launch," the company added, explaining that giving founders access to its models and products from the start is the most useful support it can offer.
The program page links to a 36-page founder's playbook PDF. The document divides the journey into four stages, Idea, MVP, Launch, and Scale, and lays out how to use Claude, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork at each one. Citing the figure that even before the era of agentic coding 42% of startups failed because they built something nobody wanted, the playbook warns that a quickly built prototype is not the same as a validated problem. The customer stories Anthropic features on the page include EvenUp, which cut document drafting time from 15 hours to 15 minutes, and Vega, which cut analyst work time by 67%.
Competitors have laid out the same field. According to reports, OpenAI and Google also run their own startup programs as they compete for developer loyalty, and most of Anthropic's revenue comes from business customers. A design that ties credits to its own API and even helps with marketplace listings points to a plan to grow early-stage startups inside Anthropic's own ecosystem.
The weight of this expansion lies less in the total value of the benefits than in how they are bundled. By packaging the Team plan, first-party API credits, the Applied AI team's time, and marketplace entry together, it gathers founders' early tool choices around Claude. Credits that expire in six months and cannot be used on third-party platforms make that direction clear. The question left for founders is whether their product grows on that stack enough to keep it after the free year ends.
