Gemini's free year for college students requires a payment method on file

According to Google Korea's official student offer announcement, the deal gives eligible college students a full year of Google AI Plus for free. The perks include usage limits twice as high as regular Gemini, 400GB of cloud storage, and access to Gemini Omni. The announcement also introduced study-focused features like study notebooks, quizzes, and a student hub, noting that some of these will gradually roll out to regular Gemini users as well, not just students.

To put it plainly, the tier being made free here is Google AI Plus, one of Google's several paid plans. The student discount for Google AI Pro, a pricier, higher tier, is a separate offer with its own pricing and terms. SheerID, meanwhile, is the third-party student verification service Google uses to confirm actual enrollment, checking eligibility through a school email or academic records.

The eligibility rules turn out to be more detailed than they might first appear. Per the Google AI student offer terms, applicants must be at least 18 years old, currently enrolled at a higher education institution in a supported country or region, and must pass SheerID's student verification. On top of that, you need a personal Google account and a Google Payments account with a payment method registered. On the flip side, school-issued Workspace for Education accounts can't apply, and neither can family group members, business purchasers, subscribers on discounted Pixel bundles, users already on Google One through a third-party channel like Google Fi, or supervised accounts managed by a guardian.

This is especially worth noting if you're part of a family group. The terms explicitly state that family group members aren't eligible for this free offer. That said, there's no need to automatically leave your family group just for this deal. Leaving could affect other shared family subscriptions or storage sharing, so it's safer to check your own account first before deciding.

The actual application starts at gemini.google/students or the official application link at one.google.com/ai-student. Opening this link with a Google Workspace business account triggers a message reading, "Sign in with a personal account — switch to a personal Google account to access Google One," which we confirmed firsthand. In other words, you need to sign in with the personal Google account you normally use, not one issued by a school or employer, for the application screen to proceed correctly. From there, the flow is: go to the official application link, sign in with your personal account, complete SheerID verification with the academic information requested on screen, and finally read through the benefits and billing terms screen carefully before finishing the application.

According to the current Korean-language Google AI Plus student offer and billing notice, the application deadline is December 31, 2026. That doesn't mean everyone's free period ends on that date — it's simply the cutoff by which you need to apply to claim the free offer. The billing language reads as follows: a valid payment method must be registered at signup, and unless canceled in advance, Google AI Plus will automatically charge 7,500 won a month once the free trial ends, with cancellation possible at any time. That 7,500 won figure is copied directly from what appeared on the official page as of September 8, 2026 — it isn't a number confirmed by actually completing student verification and reaching the final payment screen. Past search indexing has shown a figure of 11,000 won instead, so applicants should take a screenshot of the final amount and next billing date that appears on their own screen.

There are a few things worth keeping in mind whether the free period ends naturally or you cancel partway through. Under the terms, canceling during the free period can still leave access intact for the remainder of that period. On the other hand, if the free offer ends or is canceled while you've filled up the full 400GB of storage, saving new files beyond the default storage allowance may be restricted. Usage limits can also differ between free-offer users and paying Google One subscribers, and the terms note these can change without notice. In short, this isn't a setup you can keep using indefinitely without limits.

If you want to stop billing, follow the Google One membership cancellation instructions. On a computer, go to Google One, open settings, click cancel membership, and the process is done once you receive a confirmation message. If you originally subscribed to Google One through an app store, though, you may need to cancel separately through Apple's subscription management screen. It's also worth knowing that after cancellation, existing benefits generally remain in place until the end of the current billing cycle, and afterward, exceeding your storage allowance can restrict sending and receiving Gmail, uploading to Drive, or backing up Photos.

Before applying, it genuinely helps to record — as a screenshot or note — whether the free offer was applied, the next billing date, the amount due, the account used for student verification, any cancellation confirmation message, and the state of your storage after the offer ends. Setting your own calendar reminder to check in before the free period ends is one practical way to stay on top of it. None of this is something Google automatically tracks for you, so it's on the applicant to keep tabs on it.

The push to lock in college students with AI subscriptions isn't a Google-only move. As covered in OpenAI reportedly considers giving US college students a free year of ChatGPT Plus, OpenAI is said to have been preparing a similar free campaign for US college students around the same time. Google's offer arrives as part of a broader pattern of AI companies racing to capture the student market at the start of each school term.
