Start with the chip numbers. The A20 Pro is Apple's first 2nm smartphone chip, and its 6-core CPU includes two super cores the company calls desktop-class. Splitting the Neural Engine into two blocks is the defining feature of this generation, and the company described it as twice the compute for on-device AI.
For anyone running models on the device, why these numbers matter is clear. Before raw compute, the first walls you hit are heat and bandwidth, and this time both were addressed. Wider memory bandwidth reduces the bottleneck when reading in the weights of a large model. On the thermal side, the silicon now attaches directly to a vapor chamber, and the iPhone 18 Pro launched alongside it delivers 40% faster sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro thanks to this cooling design, according to the company. An assistant that keeps reading the screen and holds context as it moves between apps needs this kind of sustained performance, not short bursts.
Here are the iPhone Duo's specifications. Unfolded, the display is 7.6 inches; folded, the 5.4-inch outer display covers 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro's screen area. Both displays support ProMotion and always-on, with peak brightness of 3,000 nits. There is a nano-texture finish, and the body is grade 5 titanium polished to a mirror. The front is covered in Ceramic Shield 2, which the company says is three times more scratch-resistant, and the back in Ceramic Shield. The hinge is assembled from more than 100 parts, and water and dust resistance is rated IP68, surviving 30 minutes at 6 meters.
There are two batteries, one on each side. Video playback runs up to 31 hours on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, and 24 hours per charge with mixed use. The company says it reaches half charge in 20 minutes wired or 30 minutes wireless. The cameras are a 48-megapixel main and an ultra-wide of the same resolution, with 2x optical telephoto and 4K 120fps Dolby Vision recording. The video-call camera is hidden beneath the display. Pricing starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with pre-orders on October 16 and sales starting October 23 in more than 70 countries. CEO John Ternus called the iPhone Duo "the biggest change since the original iPhone."
A feature for photo authenticity is also new. Reference Image, included in the iPhone 18 Pro, is a way for the device to digitally certify that a photo taken with that camera was not later altered by AI. With generative tools producing results indistinguishable from photographs, this is an attempt to prove originality on the capture side rather than the creation side, which runs in the opposite direction. METAL reported OpenAI's release of ChatGPT Images 2.5, which raised generation speed and image quality; put the two announcements side by side and one is a race to make things more convincing, the other a race to mark what is real.
