OpenAI has teased an "Ultrafast mode" for GPT-5.6 Sol. What kind of model is Sol

GPT-5.6 Sol is OpenAI's frontier model that received an update on August 8 improving answer conciseness and factual accuracy. At the time, the updated version was rolled out to Plus and Pro subscribers, while the default model for Free and Go users was switched to GPT-5.6 Luna. In an internal safety evaluation conducted around the same time, existing models including Sol were rated at "High" cyber capability — one level below "Critical." Ultrafast mode is described as a derivative of this Sol model, focused specifically on reducing response latency while maintaining answer quality.

What the demo images showed

The two images OpenAI released together showed the same warehouse facility layout diagram (FC Plan 18B) labeled respectively "GPT-5.6 Sol Standard" and "GPT-5.6 Sol Ultrafast." The two diagrams are identical in every figure — 1,536 square meters of floor area, 12 storage zones, 4 stations. This appears intended to demonstrate that only processing speed differs, while output quality remains unchanged. The diagrams also included a note reading, "This legacy view cannot simulate logistics flow, test bottlenecks, or compare operational policies," which appears to be presented as an example highlighting the limitations of static, existing planning tools.

Who gets access first

Ultrafast mode is being offered only through the OpenAI API, not through ChatGPT. In this announcement, OpenAI said it would grant access first to a small group of select customers, and that it plans to expand the rollout to more enterprises as processing capacity increases. This isn't a feature that general users can try directly in the app — it's aimed first at enterprise customers that need large-scale API calls.
