Same script, run through seven platforms

Higgsfield published a side-by-side test of seven AI avatar generators on its blog. The platforms tested were Higgsfield, HeyGen, Synthesia, ElevenLabs, Creatify, InVideo, and Kling AI. Every platform was fed the identical 15-second English script, with conditions standardized to 720p resolution and a single presenter on screen. No background music or additional video sources were used.

The same input was generated repeatedly to check whether the same face appeared each time. Credit consumption was read from each account's usage counter, and pricing was re-verified against official rate pages as of August 2026. The result: actual cost per clip made from the same script ranged from $0.24 on HeyGen to $2.88 on ElevenLabs — a gap of more than tenfold.

How much does pure TTS cost

Converting the same 242-character script into speech alone costs an entirely different order of magnitude than producing a full avatar video. Most platforms bundle TTS and avatar rendering into a single charge, but a few separate them, revealing the gap.

ElevenLabs shows this structure most starkly. Synthesizing a 242-character script into speech costs 242 credits, roughly 5 cents. But the moment lip-sync avatar video is layered onto that voice, consumption jumps to 14,422 credits — nearly a 60x increase in cost. This is because ElevenLabs' avatar video rendering runs on an external engine (Creatify Aurora). In other words, ElevenLabs is among the cheapest TTS tools in the industry, but the most expensive avatar video tool.

By contrast, HeyGen, InVideo, Synthesia, Kling AI, and Creatify bundle TTS and avatar rendering into a single credit charge. In this case, pure TTS cost can't be separated out, but a single payment produces a finished video. InVideo and Creatify internally use ElevenLabs TTS while wrapping it in their own credit systems to manage total video completion cost as one package.

In short, if the goal is simply converting text to speech, ElevenLabs is the most economical. But if a "talking avatar video" is needed, comparisons should be based on final clip cost, not TTS unit price.

Why "talking avatars" became necessary

AI avatar generators are tools that turn a text script into video with lip movements and speech synchronized, without requiring anyone to stand in front of a camera. The most expensive part of traditional video production was casting and filming people. Changing a single line of script used to require a reshoot; avatar generators replace that entire process with typing. As a result, they're being rapidly adopted for social short-form content, product explainer videos, internal training materials, and multilingual guide videos.

A cheap subscription doesn't mean a cheap clip

The most notable finding in this test is that the ranking by monthly subscription fee is completely different from the ranking by cost per clip.

The platform with the cheapest monthly subscription is ElevenLabs, at $6/month. But producing a single 15-second clip consumes 14,422 credits, making its per-clip cost $2.88 — the highest of the seven. Within the 30,000-credit monthly cap, users can effectively make only two avatar clips. ElevenLabs' credit system is optimized for speech synthesis (1 credit per character); when it comes to converting text to speech alone, a 242-character script costs only 242 credits, a few cents. But once avatar video rendering (via the Creatify Aurora engine) is added, credit consumption jumps nearly 60x.

HeyGen, conversely, costs $29/month — nearly five times more than ElevenLabs — but each clip requires only 5 credits, putting its per-clip cost at $0.24. Within its 600-credit allowance, users could theoretically generate up to 120 clips. The gap between subscription price and actual output volume is extreme.

This reversal occurs because billing units differ completely across platforms. Some deduct credits by the second, some charge a flat rate per clip, and some scale by resolution. Actual spending is hard to gauge from the pricing page alone. When choosing an avatar video tool, the priority should be calculating the actual cost of producing one clip under identical conditions — not the monthly subscription fee.

The script itself wasn't a simple greeting, either. It deliberately tested lip-sync quality with words requiring full lip closure like "Monday," "budget," and "opening," number pronunciation like "94%," and the natural pause of a short negative sentence.

So what changes now

This signals that the criteria for choosing video production tools are shifting from "what features does it have" to "how cheaply can the same output be produced." This comparison fills in information that pricing pages alone can't reveal, by directly checking whether faces stay consistent across repeated generations and how many credits are actually consumed. For practitioners producing multilingual explainer videos or frequently updated product intros, checking per-clip cost and face-consistency rates first — rather than monthly subscription price — is likely to be the more practical standard for decision-making.
