Paid conversion
When a user who has been trying a product for free starts actually paying to use the paid version.
In plain words
Paid conversion refers to the moment someone who's been enjoying something for free finally opens their wallet and starts paying for it properly. It's like trying a free sample of sausage at a supermarket tasting counter, liking it, and putting it in your cart. Some people just taste and walk away, while others actually buy — the ratio of people who buy, and the act itself, is what's called paid conversion.
AI services typically offer certain features for free while selling more powerful features or unlimited usage through monthly paid subscriptions. In this setup, the percentage of free users who actually click the payment button serves as a report card for the service's business performance. If the conversion rate is low, the free trial itself might be wildly popular while the company still fails to make money.
This is why news that an AI service's user base has exploded and news about how much money that service actually makes are two different stories. No matter how many free users a service has, if paid conversion doesn't follow, it won't translate into revenue — which is why the industry watches this number as closely as it watches growth.
