Japanese startup MW held a brand launch event in Tokyo's Toyosu district on September 10 and gave the first live demonstration of MW bot, a housekeeping robot that moves along ceiling rails. The venue featured the roughly 30-square-meter, 12-ton trailer house the company uses for development and testing, hauled in whole; inside it, the robotic arm put groceries away in the refrigerator and folded laundry. MW said it will build a demonstration house with the robot installed in Hiyoshi, Yokohama in 2027, and start selling that house from 2028.

The first thing that stands out is that the robot doesn't move around on the floor — it hangs from the ceiling. Two arms with claw-shaped hands travel along a track mounted on the ceiling, like a curtain rail. Satoshi Asatani, who leads AI and robotics development at MW, explained that the idea came from the observation that floor space in a home is limited while the ceiling remains dead space. He also cited the fact that this design fully separates the paths people walk from the paths the robot travels as an advantage of the structure.
The reason MW didn't go with a humanoid came up at the same event. Shuzo Narita, MW's co-founder and CEO, pointed out that bringing a human-sized bipedal robot into a small house eats into living space, and that a floor-moving robot ends up sharing paths with children, elderly residents, and pets. The company's own presentation materials state plainly that MW bot can do a narrower range of tasks than a humanoid. In exchange, the company argues, it wins on installation, safety, and fit with the house. Narita even added that folding the robot into the house's fixtures makes it possible to bundle its cost into a mortgage.
What MW is selling isn't a single robot — it's the whole house. In his presentation, CEO Narita said, "We believe that something with three elements — perception, intelligence, and finally a body — can be called a living thing, and what we're thinking about now is putting these three elements into the house itself." In this structure, in-house sensor modules and voice AI handle perception, software called MW Intelligence handles intelligence, and MW bot serves as the body. He called this picture "self-driving for the house."
The demo ran for a little over 15 minutes. A cargo transport robot running on the ceiling rail carried a shopping basket to the kitchen, then handed the load off — attaching and detaching magnetically — to an upper-body-shaped work robot. Using a camera mounted at its fingertip, the work robot distinguished soy sauce, carrots, and bottled water one by one and sorted them onto shelves and into the refrigerator. It then unfolded a face towel and a T-shirt that were treated as having just come out of the dryer, smoothed out the wrinkles, and folded them — the towel came out folded neatly, while the T-shirt's finish was less clean.

Asatani explained why folding fabric is hard this way: "Having a robot fold soft fabric items like this is actually an extremely difficult task. Fabric items like clothing are so soft that their condition changes every single time." That means the robot has to recognize an object whose shape differs each time and adjust its actions accordingly. METAL has reported that the humanoid Apollo, running Gemini Robotics 2, struggled even more with kitchen work — the difficulty of handling soft, deformable objects doesn't care what shape the robot is.
The most important fact of the day came out in the Q&A after the demo. Asatani revealed, "Today's demo was actually teleoperated — there really is a person controlling the robot remotely." The towel-folding the audience watched wasn't a decision the AI made on its own; it was the result of a human's remote input. The company didn't hide this — it disclosed it in response to a question, and described the current stage as a data-collection process aimed at eventual autonomy.
That raises the next question: how far off is autonomy? CEO Narita said, "The point is that this is still just the entrance. Right now this robot's speed is one-twentieth of a human's. Our plan now is to multiply that by ten over three years — to bring it up to half of human speed." He added that just three months ago, the robot couldn't even properly grip a screw and dropped plastic bottles, and that its speed has already doubled compared to a month ago. The fuel for that speedup is data. The company said it is collecting household task data by having people operate a dedicated rig with the exact same joint structure and hands as MW bot, and that it plans to expand the current fleet of 20 such rigs to 50 starting next month, aiming to collect 50,000 to 100,000 hours a year.
The housing side of the business is already moving faster than the robot. MW is running twenty house projects across three lines — Urban, Ocean, and Mountain — with 16 of them in the Urban line. Inquiries topped 1,000 as soon as sales opened for the first Meguro model, and three units have been completed in Yokohama, where viewing tours have begun. Narita was clear, though, that the completed Yokohama houses include MW Intelligence — sensors and voice AI — but that "the robot isn't in there yet."

According to MW's official announcement reviewed by METAL, the company's research and development of a home-robot foundation model was selected on September 9 for GENIAC, a national project run by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO. The rationale behind the selection is to bring foundation-model robotics development — which has so far centered on logistics and manufacturing — into the living space where people spend the most time. The company has raised a cumulative 3 billion yen in its seed round as of this June, and according to reports, Narita said he plans a Series A of around 10 billion yen within the next two years. The company has just over 50 employees, who handle robot design, house design, construction, and software development all in-house.
Pricing and timelines were also announced. The houses currently on sale run from 200 million to 400 million yen including land, and according to reports, the robot's monthly usage fee is expected to fall between 5,000 and 10,000 yen. Narita laid out a plan to mass-produce several hundred units a year starting in 2029 and expand overseas, with a target of reaching 10,000 units a year by 2035 — a scale equal to 5 percent of all newly built houses in Japan today.
The company didn't hide where the idea came from. Narita said he drew inspiration from Tony Stark's house in the Iron Man films, calling his company a physical-AI startup and saying he wants to build something close to Stark's AI butler, Jarvis. Waseda University professor Tetsuya Ogata is listed as an advisor. Right now, the company's main source of revenue isn't the robot but real estate — and the launch event itself was held outdoors in the rain, since the 12-ton trailer house couldn't fit indoors.
Two things were confirmed at Toyosu that day. First, a design that builds the house around the robot, rather than fitting the robot to the house, actually moved in physical form. Second, a human is still the one producing that movement. MW has pinned the gap between the two to a number: three years. The answer — going from one-twentieth to one-half of human speed — will come from the demonstration house rising in Hiyoshi in 2027.
