Backflip AI has unveiled an AI tool that converts 3D scan data into editable, parametric CAD models. The tool is notable for automating reverse-engineering work that typically required skilled personnel and significant time to complete.
What was announced
The tool converts 3D scan output directly into editable CAD files. It's offered as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion, allowing it to be added to existing CAD workflows as a supplementary tool.
Backflip AI CEO Greg Mark said that most factories have digital models for less than one percent of their parts.
What changes
Scanning a physical part or piece of equipment and then converting it into a CAD model typically takes hours, according to reports. Backflip AI says its tool cuts this process down to minutes. This is expected to make it much easier to convert aging equipment or parts that lack digital models into parametric data.
Alongside the launch of this tool, Backflip AI has raised $30 million in funding, in a move reportedly aimed at digital transformation in the manufacturing and design sectors.
