Tool Calling Loop

A Tool Calling Loop is the process where an AI that can't produce an answer by itself calls an external tool to get the information it needs, judges whether that result is sufficient, and if not, calls another tool — repeating this cycle as many times as necessary.

Think of an employee in a meeting who gets asked a question they can't answer on the spot. They step out to the file room, grab a document, and if that still isn't enough, go back for another one, only returning to the meeting once they've gathered enough material to give an answer. This whole back-and-forth flow — look something up, judge whether it's enough, look up more — used to have to be coded in by hand, step by step, in a computer program.

Recently, cloud providers have started handling this looping process themselves on the server side. That means the person building the application no longer has to design this back-and-forth process directly; they can simply take the final result and use it.

The article explains that AWS Amazon Bedrock's web search feature means "you don't need to implement a separate tool calling loop on the client side." This doesn't mean the tool calling loop itself has disappeared. The repeated cycle of calling a search, judging the result, and searching again still happens — it's just that AWS's servers handle it automatically instead of the developer writing that logic themselves.

Try giving a chatbot with web search enabled a question that can't be answered with a single search — for example, "Look up a specific company's stock price this week, its percentage change from the previous day, and the recent news behind that change, then summarize it," a question that requires gathering different pieces of information from different sources. If the chatbot doesn't answer right away but instead runs several separate searches, that's the Tool Calling Loop in action.
