Sleep Stage Accuracy

A measure of how precisely a wearable device, like a smart ring or watch, can identify the sleep stage of a sleeping person.

In plain words

Sleep stage accuracy is a number that shows how well a device like a ring or watch can tell whether you're in light sleep, deep sleep, or REM (dreaming) sleep while you're asleep. It works much like a teacher grading a test by comparing a student's answers to the correct ones: the device's sleep-stage readings are lined up against the true results to see how closely they match.

The "true results" come from a clinical sleep study, which uses precise measurements of brain waves, eye movements, and muscle tension to determine sleep stages. A ring or watch, on the other hand, can only guess at sleep stages using indirect signals like heart rate, movement, and skin temperature from your finger or wrist, so it's difficult for these devices to produce results that perfectly match a clinical exam. That's why device makers try to express how closely their algorithms track clinical results using an accuracy figure.

When a sleep-tracking ring company's valuation makes headlines, this accuracy is one of the things people want to know about. The ring itself is just simple hardware, but turning heart rate and movement data into sleep stages ultimately comes down to the algorithm and software built into it.

Try it yourself

Try asking an AI chatbot this: "How is the sleep stage accuracy of smartwatches or smart rings usually validated? How might it differ from a clinical sleep study?" Reading the answer can help you get a sense of how much to trust the sleep graphs on your own device.
