Semantic snippet extraction is a way of feeding search results to an AI model by cutting out just the parts of a web page that are actually relevant to the question, instead of passing along the whole page. Think of it like a library that, instead of lending you an entire book, photocopies only the few pages you actually need.

The key word here is 'semantically.' Rather than just matching sentences that contain the exact words from the query, this method finds passages that are meaningfully related in content. That way, clutter like ads, menus, or repeated boilerplate gets filtered out, leaving only the information that truly matters within the limited amount of text an AI can read at once.

This matters because AI models often need to cite sources when answering questions about information they didn't know during training—like a law that changed yesterday or news from this morning. Dumping an entire page into the model increases the chance it misses the key point or makes something up, whereas precisely selecting the relevant passages keeps the answer more firmly anchored to the actual source.

AWS explained that the new web search feature added to Amazon Bedrock 'performs semantic snippet extraction to pull out passages relevant to the query and returns them in a form optimized for the model's context window.' It's easy to misread this as simply 'search and hand over a link.' In reality, it means trimming the original page down to just the necessary sentences so the AI can read them without waste.
