emergent shorthand

Emergent shorthand is a kind of abbreviated notation that an AI invents on its own during a long stretch of work. It isn't a format anyone taught it — it's just short symbols or words that only need to make sense to itself a moment later, used to sum up what it has figured out so far and hand that off to the next step.

Here's an analogy. During an exam, if you can't copy your entire working from one problem to the next, you might jot a cryptic note in the margin — something nobody else could decipher, but that's enough for you to pick up where you left off. AI does something similar: when a conversation or task runs too long to hold everything in mind from scratch, instead of writing out the reasoning behind a rule in full sentences, it compresses it into its own short expressions and carries that forward.

This notation is called "emergent" because no developer designed it in advance — it simply solidifies on its own as the AI repeats similar tasks. That's also why, if you force the AI to expand this compressed note into full, human-readable sentences, the amount of information goes up, but the speed or accuracy of the next step can actually get worse.

After exchanging several messages with an AI chatbot, ask it: "If you've kept any summary or shorthand notes to yourself to help continue our conversation, show them to me as they are." If the answer comes back as symbols or short fragments rather than full sentences, that's an example of emergent shorthand.
