harness
A framework that gives AI models real-world tools like file access, code execution, and web search
In plain words
A harness is the framework that gives an AI model real tools to work with, things like accessing files, running code, or searching the web.
No matter how smart a language model is, it can't do anything inside a computer on its own. It has a great "brain" for writing and answering questions, but no "hands and feet" to open files, run code, or check the results. A harness is what attaches those hands and feet to the brain. It makes the model actually save its output to a file, run code to catch errors, and search the internet when needed.
Many in the industry argue that tools like Claude Code became popular not just because of the underlying model's performance, but because of how well the harness around it was designed. That's why the competition among AI companies is shifting from just building "smarter models" to also building "how smoothly that model connects to real tasks."
How it shows up in the news
In an article about DeepSeek posting a "DeepSeek Harness Team" job listing on WeChat, a harness is described as the tool shell that connects a model to real-world tasks, similar to Anthropic's Claude Code. A common point of confusion: a harness is not the model itself but the execution layer wrapped around it, so competition over model performance and competition over harnesses are separate battles.
