According to Fortune's report on his Fox Business interview, Huang said: "Don't forget the chip factories, the packaging, the computer factories, and all the AI factories being built right now. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are being created as we speak."

Huang doesn't think white-collar jobs will vanish overnight, but he does see a major boom coming in skilled trades. His reasoning: every job changes in some way and some disappear, but more new jobs get created than are lost. This isn't a new position for him. Back in September of last year, he told Channel 4 News in the UK that building factories alone would require hundreds of thousands of electricians, plumbers, and carpenters. And at the World Economic Forum in Davos this past January, he described the current moment as the largest infrastructure build-out in human history.

That framing carries more than cheerleading behind it. NVIDIA's chips power the data centers underpinning the AI boom, but building those data centers takes far more than semiconductors. Running the power plants, grids, and cooling systems requires thousands of skilled workers on the ground. A skilled-trades boom would benefit the broader U.S. economy — but it's also directly tied to NVIDIA's own growth.

What the numbers in Ohio show

The clearest example of this dynamic is in Piketon, Ohio. In early August, NVIDIA committed up to $105 billion in credit and investment for an OpenAI data center to be built there — one of the largest data centers in the world. SB Energy, a SoftBank Group affiliate, is leading development, and its job postings show power-division project manager salaries that far outstrip the local median household income.

In a town of fewer than 27,000 people, that salary is more than double the local average. Demand for data center labor is showing up elsewhere too. QTS, a Blackstone portfolio company that operates and develops more than 75 data centers worldwide, expects its on-site workforce to grow from roughly 10,000 a year ago to 40,000 by the end of 2026 — a 300% increase. Blackstone President and COO Jon Gray said earlier this year that blue-collar hiring is set for a major boom over the next five years.

Why the skilled-labor shortage is real

No matter how hot the construction boom is for data centers and chip fabs, it can't move faster than the hands available to build them. To close that gap, executives from BlackRock, Carhartt, Ford Motor, and Google recently formed the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades. The plan is to expand skilled-trades education across 30 states and eventually scale it nationwide. In a Fortune op-ed, participating executives — including Ford's Jim Farley — argued that no single company or industry can prepare the country for this shift on its own.

The gap between Bill Gates' and Jensen Huang's views comes down to where each of them is standing. Gates made his career reshaping the world through software, so he has a front-row seat to how quickly AI is replacing white-collar work. Huang, on the other hand, is on the side building the physical infrastructure that runs AI — the factories, the power grids, the plumbing. They're looking at the same AI boom but watching different clocks: one tracking how fast screen-based jobs disappear, the other tracking how fast hands-on labor runs short.

The two views aren't necessarily opposites. This debate will only get louder as more data centers break ground. CEOs like Huang, whose companies' revenue is directly tied to infrastructure construction, will keep making the optimistic case. Whether that optimism holds up will be measured by one number: whether the 2.1-million-worker skilled-trades gap actually starts shrinking.
