Ten Thai startups team up with OpenAI
OpenAI and Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) have kicked off an eight-week accelerator program. Unveiled at a launch event in Bangkok, the program brings together five health and wellness startups and five education startups — ten in total. Notably, this marks OpenAI's first public-private partnership program with the Thai government. Thailand's National Innovation Agency (NIA), Mahidol University, and Techsauce are jointly running the program.
Some of the participating companies reportedly came out of the AIAT x OpenAI Codex Hackathon Bangkok held earlier this year. Teams that validated their ideas at the hackathon are now taking the next step toward building real services.
Five in health and wellness, five in education — what they're building
The ten selected companies are each tackling different problems. On the health and wellness side, the lineup includes CARIVA, which is building a voice agent for hospital call centers, along with Wello Food, Dietz, Precisionize, and FitSloth. On the education side are Curico and insKru, which build learning tools for children, plus Floaino, EasyKids Robotics, and Globish.

OpenAI cited Thailand's aging population and its need to prepare for a digital economy as reasons for choosing these two sectors. As the elderly population grows, demand is rising for healthcare that supports prevention and independent living. At the same time, improving learning outcomes is seen as directly tied to Thailand's long-term competitiveness.
What support do they get over eight weeks
Each participating startup receives $2,000 in API credits, access to OpenAI's latest models, and a dedicated mentor. Weekly sessions cover product design, engineering, automated testing, evaluation, responsible AI, privacy and security, cost management, growth, and fundraising. MHESI connects startups to research and talent networks, NIA supports funding and the growth ecosystem, and Mahidol University provides academic expertise and mentors.
Each startup sets specific product, pilot, evaluation, and commercialization goals within the eight-week window. By the end of the program, they're expected to show a working product or a meaningful upgrade, real user data, early evaluation results, and an actionable roadmap.
Sandy Kunvatanagarn, OpenAI's head of policy for Thailand and ASEAN, said, "The big breakthroughs usually come not from platform companies but from founders who deeply understand the problem."
From hospital phone lines to classrooms
CARIVA is developing a multilingual voice agent for hospital phone lines. The goal is to let patients converse in their preferred language while the system handles routine requests like appointment scheduling, and to detect emergencies during calls. Over the course of the accelerator, the company plans to work with OpenAI to refine evaluation methods and control strategies for real-time voice models, and to deploy its first features into a pilot hospital's actual call flow by demo day.
On the education side, Curico builds AI learning tools for children, families, and teachers. The company aims to pilot its platform at childcare facilities under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration by demo day, while laying the groundwork to expand to more than 200 facilities. It also plans to train more than 200 teachers through AI picture-book workshops with the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology, test AI-assisted grading at Chulalongkorn University, and grow its family learning platform to more than 1,000 monthly active users.
According to Professor Dr. Yodchanan Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, the program's goal is to "build in Thailand and deliver measurable benefits to Thai people."
Why Thailand, why now
OpenAI said Thailand ranks among the top 20 countries in the world by weekly active ChatGPT users. Weekly Codex usage in Thailand has grown more than 350-fold since early 2026, the company said, putting the country in the top 20 by that metric as well. OpenAI framed this as a sign that people are increasingly turning to AI to write software and build products. But it also noted that for this growth to move beyond the demo stage, it needs to be backed by real user feedback, safeguards, and sustainable business models.
The program wraps up with a demo day in Bangkok this November. Participating startups will present what they've built, along with user data and product evaluations, and lay out their deployment and growth plans, in front of investors, government agencies, universities, hospitals, schools, and potential customers. OpenAI said this first cohort is meant to establish a repeatable model connecting government, universities, startups, investors, and technology partners.
Editor's take
The real story here is that OpenAI deliberately partnered with a government to enter two regulation-heavy sectors — health and education. Rolling out a chatbot API is something any company can do in any country. But running a pilot inside a hospital call center or a childcare facility requires navigating local regulations, hospital systems, and teacher networks. Bringing in NIA, Mahidol University, and Thailand's education ministry looks like a deliberate move to clear those barriers with the government's help.
Having watched a number of similarly sized regional accelerators play out, I'd say the real test always comes in the six months after demo day, not during the program itself. Attaching a single pilot within eight weeks is achievable with $2,000 in credits and one mentor. But something like CARIVA's emergency-detection feature won't prove accurate until it's been tested against real patient data at scale. The same goes for Curico's targets of 200 childcare facilities and 200 teachers — the real test comes after the pilot, during the scale-up phase.
What's worth watching from outside Thailand is that OpenAI has explicitly framed this government-linked model as repeatable. If Thailand is the first case, the next is likely to be another Asian country with a similar demographic profile and similar digital-transformation challenges. Domestic healthcare and edtech startups elsewhere may want to study this structure between a government ministry and OpenAI as a reference for designing their own pilots.
In the coming weeks, expect more specific targets to emerge from the other eight startups beyond CARIVA and Curico. Which teams actually land real hospital or school pilots by the November demo day will determine whether this program ends up as a one-off showcase or becomes a model that spreads across Asia beyond Thailand.
