Claude Code's weekly limit rises 25% permanently on Sept 14, but that's actually a cut

What was announced

Anthropic's developer tools account, ClaudeDevs, said on August 29 that starting September 14, weekly usage limits for its coding agent Claude Code will rise permanently by 25% over the prior baseline. The change applies to Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Until September 14, the current temporary 50% boost remains in effect.

Techmeme summarized the announcement by noting that while weekly limits will permanently rise 25% for most plans starting September 14, that's actually a 17% cut compared with the current 50% boost. Once the temporary measure is lifted, the limit users actually feel will end up lower than what they have now.

What this means

This move didn't come out of nowhere. Claude Code had already extended its temporary 50% weekly limit boost through August 31, an extension announced on August 18. At the time, Anthropic said demand for its models was strong enough that capacity could stay tight for several weeks, and it signaled it was considering whether to make the temporary boost permanent. This latest announcement is the outcome of that review — and notably, the permanent increase turned out smaller than the temporary one.

Claude Code is an agentic tool that reads, fixes, and runs code from the terminal, so the amount of tokens a user can burn through in a week effectively caps how much work they can get done. For Anthropic, the pattern seems to be: loosen limits temporarily when demand spikes, then dial them back down to a sustainable level once the system stabilizes. Anthropic is the company behind Claude; Amazon and Google are investors and cloud providers but have no role in developing Claude. This limit policy, too, was decided and announced solely by Anthropic.

What changes for users

Anyone currently using Claude Code should be aware that the limit they actually feel could shrink starting September 14. Teams with heavy coding workloads in particular may want to review their usage patterns around that date. This pricing structure applies equally to development teams using Claude Code in Korea, so projects with high usage volumes would be wise to adjust their work schedules around the September 14 transition.
