What Is Sakana AI

"Sakana" (さかな) means "fish" in Japanese. Sakana AI is a company founded in Japan by Llion Jones, a co-author of the original Transformer paper, and David Ha, formerly of Google Brain. The company has built its name on research into evolutionary algorithms and model merging. Given that the company already leans into fish metaphors in its very name, the "MECHA FISH" and "Autonomous Shoaling" phrasing may not be mere wordplay but a pointer to an actual research direction.

Fish Schools and Swarm Intelligence

"Shoaling" is a biological term describing the behavior of fish swimming together in groups.
