A patent document Meta recently filed with the US Patent Office includes this scene as an example. As a dinner gathering is winding down, the AI speaks up first: "I've generated some highlights of tonight's dinner party. Would you like to see them?" For this scene to make sense, something must have happened beforehand — the system had to recognize someone's face, judge that a meaningful moment was occurring, and begin recording. According to illustrations in the patent document, the system is designed to identify people and recognize actions in order to automatically start recording. Nowhere in the example does the system ask permission to record.

How it earned the nickname "pervert glasses"
Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses are already at the center of covert-recording controversies. Repeated cases of the onboard camera capturing bystanders without consent have earned the glasses the nickname "pervert" glasses. Meta has said it built a white capture LED into the glasses to indicate when recording is happening, and that covering or disabling this light automatically shuts off the camera. The company has also pointed out that smartphones and action cameras lack any such external indicator, arguing that its glasses are more transparent by comparison. But after people found ways to defeat the LED, Meta pushed an update that forcibly disables the camera when the light is covered or malfunctioning. Even after that measure, reports that a next-generation version capable of recording without the LED is in development have raised questions about whether the entire rationale for the light in the first place is being undermined.

A patent is not a product
Filing a patent and actually shipping a feature are two different things. Companies routinely lock down ideas they may use later through patents, and there's no guarantee this Memory Recall patent will ever become a real product. Still, the fact that Meta has spelled out this approach in a formal document is itself a signal. The patent illustrations aren't just a rough sketch of an idea — they lay out in detail how the system identifies people and when it triggers recording. That reads as a step beyond the current "notify via LED" principle, toward a design in which the AI makes the call on its own, whether or not an indicator light is even present.
Earlier this year, Meta also drew controversy after it was found sending user video clips — including footage containing banking information or nudity — to human workers for training purposes without adequate safeguards. That episode showed just how loosely privacy protections can actually operate, which is part of why this patent is drawing added scrutiny.

Privacy debates over wearable cameras tend to follow the same sequence. A minimal safeguard like an indicator light appears, people find ways to defeat it, and the company pushes an update to close the loophole. Meta's Ray-Ban glasses have gone through exactly this cycle. What makes this patent worth watching is that it points to the next stage. Rather than continuing the fight to protect the indicator light, the design philosophy itself appears to be shifting toward letting the AI decide when to record and when to generate highlights, regardless of whether an indicator light exists at all.
Anyone who has actually used smart glasses knows the feeling. The wearer is aware of what they're capturing, but the person sitting across the table has no choice but to rely on a single indicator light to know whether they're being recorded. If even that light gets pushed aside in favor of the AI's own autonomous judgment, the concept of consent effectively disappears. At dinner, you'd have no way of knowing whether the glasses across the table just recorded you and turned it into a highlight reel.
Companies and developers in Korea evaluating wearable camera products should not dismiss this patent as "a feature that doesn't exist yet." Under Korea's personal information protection framework, facial-recognition-based automatic recording without consent could itself constitute a significant legal problem, and the fact that such designs are being discussed even at the patent stage gives regulators reason to review related guidelines in advance. This is unlikely to translate into an actual shipped product within weeks, but each time controversy over bypassing indicator lights resurfaces, patents like this one are likely to be brought up again.
