An open-source tool that turns your AI coding assistant into a full video production studio

OpenMontage lets AI coding assistants like Claude Code or Cursor handle an entire video production, from research and scripting to asset generation, editing, and final composition. There's no separate code orchestrator; the assistant itself reads YAML pipeline manifests and markdown skill files and calls tools to do the work. It can produce real videos with zero paid API keys using free text-to-speech and free stock footage, and gains more generation options once you add optional API keys.

What it does

  1. Users just describe the video they want in plain language; the AI assistant runs research, writes the script, generates assets, edits, and renders it
  2. Ships with 12 production pipelines (explainer, documentary montage, avatar spokesperson, cinematic trailer, and more), 100+ tools, and 700+ agent skill files
  3. Every pipeline follows the same stages — research, proposal, script, scene plan, assets, edit, compose — with human approval gates at each creative decision point
  4. Provider selection (which model or API to use) is scored across 7 dimensions like task fit, quality, and reliability, with every choice logged for auditing
  5. After rendering, the system runs its own quality checks — ffprobe validation, frame sampling, audio level analysis — before showing the final video to the user

Why it matters

Most AI video tools just spit out a single short clip from a prompt; this project instead structures the agent's work like a real production team's workflow, with planning, editing, and review stages. Because it can build actual edited videos from free stock footage and open archives, it gives people a way to try full video production without needing paid generation APIs.
