Weather Lab

Weather Lab is an experimental forecasting site built by Google DeepMind for typhoons and hurricanes. While traditional weather agencies use supercomputers to solve physics equations to predict tomorrow's weather, this site uses an AI model trained on decades of past weather data to predict a storm's path and intensity, showing the results side by side with official forecasts from real weather agencies.

In fact, during Hurricane Melissa in 2025, this site's predictions caught early signs that the storm would suddenly intensify from Category 1 to Category 5. Based on this information, the U.S. National Hurricane Center issued an unusual warning, and Jamaica gained a full extra day to prepare — shutting down power facilities and switching hospitals to emergency mode.

In articles, 'WeatherNext' — the AI model that generates the forecasts — tends to appear more often than the name 'Weather Lab.' The two are easy to confuse: WeatherNext is the model that computes the predictions, while Weather Lab is more like the window through which people can actually view those prediction results.
