USDC (USD Coin)
A digital currency (stablecoin) issued by Circle, designed to stay pegged to the value of one US dollar.
In plain words
USDC is a digital currency built so that one unit always holds the value of one US dollar. Think of it like a gift card: real dollars are locked away in a bank vault, and digital tokens worth that same amount are issued in their place. Circle, the company behind USDC, holds onto the dollars users deposit, and swaps the tokens back for dollars whenever someone redeems them.
While ordinary cryptocurrencies can swing wildly in price within a single day, USDC is designed to keep its value almost perfectly steady. That's why the crypto world treats it as a 'safe, cash-like asset' — used as a benchmark for trading, or deposited with certain services to earn interest-like returns.
Recently, USDC has become something you can handle right inside a chatbot. A user can simply tell the chatbot to deposit USDC into a lending platform to earn yield. What's important here is recognizing that the company that creates USDC and the company that connects it to the chatbot are two separate entities.
How it shows up in the news
One article states: "You can also deposit USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle, to earn yield." A common point of confusion here is assuming USDC was created by Grok or xAI. In reality, USDC is a currency issued by Circle, a separate company — Grok merely serves as a gateway that lets users buy and deposit USDC through a payment tool called MoonPay.
