Silicon Wafer

A thin, round silicon disc used to make semiconductor chips, typically cut into many individual chips

In plain words

A silicon wafer is a thin, round, plate-shaped piece of silicon that serves as the raw material for making semiconductor chips. Engineers etch tiny circuits onto this disc—slightly larger than a CD—and the resulting surface becomes a chip that acts as a computer's brain.

Think of it like a large pizza dough. Normally, circuits are stamped onto this dough (the wafer) in many separate sections, which are then cut into pieces about the size of a fingernail. Each of those pieces becomes the individual semiconductor chip we're familiar with. It's common for hundreds of chips to come from a single wafer.

Recently, though, some companies have tried using the entire disc as one giant chip instead of cutting it apart. When a wafer is cut into pieces and each chip is connected separately, there's a delay in exchanging information between chips. But if the wafer is left uncut as a single unit, that connection delay disappears entirely.

How it shows up in the news

The article explains it as "placing the entire model on one giant silicon wafer to eliminate chip-to-chip communication altogether." A common misunderstanding here is that a silicon wafer isn't some special new material—it's the ordinary disc used in standard semiconductor manufacturing. The real difference lies in whether it's cut into multiple chips or used whole as a single chip.
