Programmatic tool calling is a way for an AI agent to run several tools together by writing out, in advance, the order in which they should be called—rather than calling them one at a time in sequence.

Imagine giving errands to an assistant. The usual way works like this: "Go to the post office and mail this letter, then tell me when it's done." Once the assistant reports back, you give the next instruction: "Now go to the bank and make a deposit." If there are ten errands, you go back and forth ten times, re-explaining the situation from scratch each time. The programmatic approach is more like handing over a full to-do list on paper in the morning: "Do all of these in this order, and just give me a summary of the results at the end." Multiple tasks get handled at once, without checking in partway through.

In practice, this difference translates into cost and speed. In typical tool calling, every time a tool is called, the model has to re-read the entire accumulated conversation history, and this history snowballs as the task drags on. Bundling multiple steps into code and running them together cuts down on these round trips, which can make a real difference in efficiency—especially for long-running autonomous tasks.

Prime Intellect's agent harness, Prime Agent, highlighted programmatic tool calling as one of its design elements. This refers not to a new tool itself, but to an execution approach that lets the agent bundle tool calls together at the code level. Since no benchmarks or specific savings figures have been released yet, it's worth not mistaking this for the name of a specific tool.
