Parametric CAD Model

A parametric CAD model is a 3D design file where changing a single numeric value (a parameter) — like a screw length or a plate thickness — automatically redraws that part and everything connected to it. Instead of a frozen 3D shape like a photograph, think of it as a living drawing that recalculates the whole result whenever a value changes, much like a spreadsheet formula.

By contrast, 3D data obtained by scanning a physical object only captures the surface shape as-is, making it hard to edit. It's the difference between a photo of a map on a wall and an actual map file where you can draw and erase roads. If a factory has an old part but the original design has been lost, scan data alone makes it difficult to slightly adjust dimensions and remake it — but converting it into a parametric CAD model allows immediate editing and redesign.
