LOLA (Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter)
An instrument aboard NASA's lunar orbiter that uses lasers to measure the height of the Moon's surface
In plain words
LOLA is an instrument aboard a NASA orbiter circling the Moon that fires lasers to measure how high or low points on the lunar surface are. Much like shining a flashlight and timing how long it takes the light to bounce back to figure out distance, LOLA sends a laser pulse to the Moon's surface and measures how long it takes to return, then calculates the elevation of that spot. Once enough of these measurements pile up, they form a three-dimensional picture of terrain features—like crater depth or slope—that would be hard to judge with the naked eye.
The elevation data LOLA collects, along with surface photos taken by a camera riding on the same orbiter, are stored in NASA's public archives where anyone can download them. In other words, LOLA itself isn't AI—it's an observation instrument that produces the raw material for mapping the Moon's terrain. Turning that data into maps or calculated routes is a job left to humans or AI afterward.
How it shows up in the news
The article explains that "the terrain and crater depths are values measured by LOLA, the laser altimeter aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)." It's worth distinguishing that LOLA itself isn't AI—it's an observation instrument launched by NASA—while it was Anthropic's Claude that interpreted those measurements to plan a route.
