Licensing

A deal in which a company is paid to allow its content or data to be used for AI training or services.

In plain words

Licensing is an agreement where whoever owns content lets an AI company use it, in exchange for money, equity, or a chance to collaborate. A record label lending songs, a game studio lending graphic assets, a news outlet lending articles to an AI company — it's a bit like a landlord collecting rent.

In the past, AI companies often scraped material floating around the internet without permission to train their models, which sparked frequent copyright disputes. In response, content companies began either fighting back with lawsuits or choosing to sign formal deals to supply their material properly. In these cases, licensing isn't just about collecting a fee for data — it can grow into a deeper relationship where the content company helps build AI tools together or even becomes an investor.

In other words, licensing gives AI companies legitimate training material while giving content companies a new revenue stream and a stake in future technology. The shift from lawsuits to contracts signals that the content industry as a whole has started treating AI not just as an enemy, but as a business partner too.

How it shows up in the news

The article uses the line: "All three deals go beyond simple licensing — they're structured so the companies help build Stability's AI tools together." A common misunderstanding here is thinking of licensing as merely 'paying a usage fee for data,' when in practice it often develops into a broader partnership involving investment and joint development.
