Dynamics Modeling

Training AI to predict how objects or scenes will move and change over time

In plain words

Dynamics modeling is the work of teaching a computer to foresee how objects or scenes will move and change as time passes.

A skilled pool player already pictures in their head, before even hitting the ball, which direction it will roll and where it will collide. Robots need the same kind of foresight. When a hand grips a cup, it has to know roughly how much the cup will deform; when it picks up a towel, it needs to anticipate how the fabric will fold. Only with this kind of prediction of upcoming physical change can a robot handle objects without breaking or dropping them. Training this predictive ability is exactly what dynamics modeling means.

This is a different skill from recognizing what's in a photo or video. Identifying a cup as a cup is a completely different problem from predicting what will happen once that cup is gripped. For robots to move safely and flexibly in real-world situations, it's this latter ability—dynamics modeling—that is considered especially important.

How it shows up in the news

In articles, you'll see phrasing like "existing robot policy models are good at describing scenes but weak at dynamics modeling." It helps to remember that dynamics modeling isn't a specific company's product name, but a general concept referring to the ability to predict how objects or scenes will change.

Try it yourself

Try giving a video generation AI service a prompt like "make a video of a rubber ball dropping and bouncing on the floor." Then try something like "make a video of a cup of water tipping over and spilling," and check whether the results match real physical laws—whether the bounce height or the direction the water spills looks plausible. This gives you a feel for how well dynamics modeling is working.
