Double-blind Evaluation
An AI evaluation method in which evaluators cannot see the model and model providers cannot see the test questions
In plain words
Double-blind evaluation is like a testing setup where the proctor and the test-taker can't see each other's cards. It applies the same principle used in medical trials—where neither doctors nor patients know who received the real drug—to the evaluation of AI models.
Until now, evaluating AI models from the outside meant accepting one of two risks. If an evaluator handed test questions over to the company that built the model, the company could secretly slip those questions into its training data and inflate its score. On the other hand, if a company handed over the model's full internals to an evaluator, there was a risk of leaking proprietary technical know-how known only to that company. Double-blind evaluation solves both problems at once by placing something like an encrypted box in between: the evaluator can't see inside the model, and the company can't see the test questions.
As a result, both sides can keep their secrets while only the final scored results come out of the box for review. This gives more confidence that the score wasn't inflated by having seen the questions in advance.
How it shows up in the news
Google DeepMind announced that it had "piloted the world's first double-blind AI evaluation." Here, double-blind doesn't simply mean having multiple evaluators—it means a structure where the evaluator cannot see the model's weights, and Google cannot see the test questions. In other words, "double" refers not to the number of people involved, but to the fact that information is hidden in both directions.
