Deep Learning
Machine learning built on deeply stacked artificial neural networks; the engine behind AI's leap forward since the 2010s.

Deep learning is a branch of machine learning that stacks artificial neural networks very deep — dozens or even hundreds of layers. As the layers get deeper, the network learns progressively more complex concepts, starting from simple patterns: recognizing lines, then eyes/nose/mouth, then whole faces.
It kicked off a new era by dominating an image recognition competition in 2012, and everything from ChatGPT to image generation today is built on top of deep learning. When an article says something is "deep learning-based," it essentially means "built the modern AI way."
