connectomics

A field of research dedicated to mapping every single neuron in the brain and every connection between them, without exception.

In plain words

Connectomics is the work of finding and mapping every neuron in the brain and every connection (synapse) linking them together. Think of a city map so detailed it shows every single alleyway. Here, the streets are neurons, and the intersections where streets meet are synapses.

Here's how such a map gets made. The brain is sliced into millions of extremely thin sections, like sheets of paper, and each cross-section is photographed under an electron microscope. On their own, these individual photos mean nothing. AI starts from a single pixel in an image, finds every other pixel belonging to the same neuron, and stitches the scattered cross-sections back together into a single 3D neural structure. Only after human researchers review and verify these reconstructions one by one does the map become complete.

The human brain has 86 billion neurons, making it impossible to map in full with current technology. So scientists are starting with smaller organisms that have far fewer neurons, like fruit flies, mapping their brains through connectomics and building the groundwork for understanding more complex brains someday.

How it shows up in the news

Articles describe it like this: "Connectomics work involves slicing the brain into millions of thin sections, photographing each one, and then using computers and AI to stitch those images back together." The key thing to keep straight is that connectomics isn't the name of a specific AI model or product—it's the name of a research field and methodology aimed at mapping the brain's connections in full.
