A checkerboard pattern is the alternating gray-and-white grid that image editing programs display to show transparent areas on screen. Image files don't actually have a color called "transparent," so editing programs have long used this pattern as a visual convention to signal that an area is empty and needs something drawn there.

The problem is that this pattern is only meant to be a display convention, yet some AI image generation models, when asked to produce a transparent background, don't actually leave the background empty—instead they draw the checkerboard pattern itself as part of the image. In that case, the file looks transparent when you open it, but there are actually gray squares baked into the image, and they show up as soon as you place it over a different background.

So to check whether transparent background support is truly working, you shouldn't just look at whether a checkerboard shows up on screen—you need to place the image over a different colored background and see if it blends in naturally.

One user replied to OpenAI's announcement about GPT-Image-2's transparent background feature, writing that it "actually is transparent 100% of the time instead of a fake checkerboard pattern 50% of the time." This refers to a bug where backgrounds that were supposed to be transparent instead had a checkerboard pattern drawn into the image nearly half the time, rather than being properly rendered as transparent. Seeing a checkerboard on screen is normal display behavior on its own, but if that pattern is actually baked into the file as colored pixels, the transparency has failed.

1. Prepare an image file that's supposed to have a transparent background.
2. Place that image over a white background and then over a black background, and compare the two.
3. If only the subject appears naturally in both cases, the transparency is genuine. But if gray-and-white square patterns show up regardless of the background, the checkerboard was drawn into the image instead of actual transparency being applied.
