ChatGPT Mil

ChatGPT Mil is a government-only version of ChatGPT that OpenAI built for use by staff at the US Department of Defense. It includes the same features familiar to everyday ChatGPT users — chat windows, file uploads, projects, and custom GPTs — but access is limited to Department of Defense civilians and service members.

The tool is focused on helping with unclassified paperwork — administrative, logistics, planning, and policy work that involves a lot of repetitive documentation. Like an internal company messaging tool, it only works inside GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense's dedicated portal, and was designed to be accessible without the data-collection concerns that come with using commercial services.

The same portal also hosts Grok for Government, built by xAI. While Grok emphasizes productivity in the field during missions, ChatGPT Mil is more geared toward office-based document work. Anthropic's Claude, meanwhile, has not yet been added to the portal because it did not agree to the unrestricted use the Department of Defense required.

Reports describe it this way: "ChatGPT Mil, part of the OpenAI for Government program, carries over the chat, file, project, and custom GPT features familiar to everyday ChatGPT users." It's easy to mistake ChatGPT Mil for a tool that handles classified information, but it's worth noting that it's actually meant to help with unclassified administrative, logistics, and planning work.
