Blind Testing
A way of judging outputs purely on their own merits, without knowing which company or program produced them
In plain words
Blind testing means scoring outputs while hiding who made them. It's like a wine tasting where the labels are covered and rankings are based on taste alone. When people know the brand name, they tend to unconsciously favor the famous one — but cover the label, and comparisons come down to pure quality.
The same logic applies when picking the best among several AI video or image generation services. If evaluators don't know which company or program produced a given video, and they score it only on things like image quality and how natural it looks, the comparison reflects actual performance rather than brand reputation.
A more reliable approach is to feed the same prompt into multiple services, mix up the resulting outputs, hide their identities, and then score them.
How it shows up in the news
Before choosing a video generation API, the article advises that "evaluators should score outputs blind — without knowing the provider or model name" — and record latency, error rates, and cost alongside image quality. A common misconception is that blind testing is only for judging visual quality; in reality, the key point is that it needs to be measured together with operational metrics like speed, cost, and failure rate to produce a comparison that's actually useful in practice.
Try it yourself
- Prepare 20-50 prompts that reflect realistic use cases in advance.
- Generate outputs from each service you want to compare, using the same prompts and the same resolution/length settings.
- Strip the service names from the output filenames and shuffle them, labeling them with numbers only.
- Rank the outputs on quality alone, without knowing which service produced which.
- After scoring is done, reveal the labels and combine the results with your records of speed, cost, and failure rate to make a final judgment.
