Auto-renewal

Auto-renewal works a lot like a gym membership. Once you sign up, money is automatically pulled from your card each month without you having to re-enroll, and your membership just continues. Most paid AI subscriptions, like ChatGPT or Claude, work the same way. You set a monthly or yearly price upfront, and when that period ends, you're billed again for the next period and service continues, usually without any extra notification or confirmation step.

The problem is that this convenience can also lead to situations where you "forget and keep paying." It's common for a free trial to automatically convert into a paid subscription the moment it ends, or for a service you no longer use to keep charging you every month. That's why many services send a reminder email a few days before billing, or provide a separate setting to turn off auto-renewal.

Because AI services tend to have plans split by feature and prices that change fairly often, it's especially important to get in the habit of checking whether auto-renewal is on and when your next billing date is.

1. Check your account settings to see when your next billing date is for any AI service you're currently paying for.
2. Set a calendar reminder for a few days before that billing date.
3. When the reminder comes up, decide then whether to keep using it, switch plans, or cancel. Just doing these three steps can reduce unexpected charges from auto-renewal.
