Workload Identity Federation

Workload Identity Federation lets a program or service—not a human—prove its identity to another system using a credential it already received from a trusted source, rather than minting a brand-new secret key of its own.

Think of it like a company ID badge. The old way is like getting a separate badge made for every building you visit; the more badges you carry, the more chances there are to lose one or have it stolen. Workload Identity Federation is more like showing a passport you already have: the security guard at another building says, 'We trust the country that issued this passport,' and lets you in without issuing a new badge. Instead of every system minting and exchanging its own passwords or keys, they simply extend an already-verified trust relationship.

This matters even more now that AI agents move between multiple services to get work done. Instead of a human clicking 'allow' every single time, an agent can simply present an identity credential it already obtained from a trusted source, and the other service can verify that credential and grant access.

A common misunderstanding: this doesn't eliminate human approval entirely—it shifts the basis of trust to an already-verified issuer so that a human doesn't need to intervene every single time.
