VST (Virtual Studio Technology)
A standard format for virtual instruments and effects that plug into music production software
In plain words
A VST plugin is the general term for virtual instruments and sound effect units that plug into music production software, following a shared technical standard. Just as a standardized electrical outlet lets you plug in appliances from any manufacturer, software built to the VST standard can be plugged into a DAW (digital audio workstation) regardless of who made it.
For example, if you want to add spacious reverb to a track, you load a reverb VST. If you want a specific company's synthesizer sound, you load that company's VST instrument. Because countless companies around the world build and sell plugins to this standard, producers can freely mix and match tools from different makers within a single program.
Recently, AI music services that generate songs from text prompts have started releasing their own built-in editing tools, and whether they support VST has become a talking point. If a service doesn't support third-party VSTs, users can't bring in the synths or effects they normally use — they're limited to whatever built-in tools the service provides.
How it shows up in the news
Articles use it like "Suno Studio does not support third-party VSTs." Here, VST isn't a feature Suno built — it's the name of a plugin standard widely used across the industry. Saying a program doesn't support it means users can't bring in synths or effects made by other companies; they're restricted to the program's own built-in tools.
