Upscaling

Upscaling is a technology where AI enlarges low-resolution images or video to make them look sharp. Simply stretching an image makes it blurry, but AI uses what it has learned to fill in "what this blurry part probably looked like."

Common uses include restoring old family photos, remastering classic films, and enhancing game graphics (like DLSS). It's worth knowing that since the AI is "plausibly inventing" information that isn't actually there, this is closer to recreation than true restoration — which is why debates arise over whether an upscaled face from low-quality CCTV footage can be used as evidence.
