Unity Catalog

Unity Catalog is a company-wide data management feature built by Databricks, working like a digital archive that lets people find and protect scattered data and AI models all in one place.

The bigger a company gets, the more its data ends up scattered across warehouse systems, separate storage spaces, and different departments' programs. When no one knows what data exists where or who's allowed to see it, employees waste hours every week just hunting for files, and sensitive information is often left open for anyone to access. Unity Catalog solves this the way a librarian would. It tags all data so it can be searched and organized, tracks where the data came from and how it's been used, and manages the access rules for who can see what, all from a single place.

Unlike bolting on a separate tool, Unity Catalog is built directly into the Databricks system where the data actually lives. That means the same access rules and history tracking apply not just to tables and files, but also to the AI models and automated programs (agents) a company runs.

One guide article, categorizing data governance tools by type, explains that "Databricks' Unity Catalog is cited as the leading example of this type within the lakehouse." Here, lakehouse refers to Databricks' own platform for storing and processing data. Despite a common mix-up, this Unity Catalog has nothing to do with the Unity game engine used in game development — it's a completely different data management product that just happens to share the name.
