Supply Chain Risk

A Supply Chain Risk designation is a government action that officially determines a company's products or services could threaten national security, and bars all public agencies from using them. It's similar to a building management office putting a contractor on a no-entry list, so that parts made by that contractor can never enter the building anywhere.

The designation doesn't stop at blocking new contracts. Existing contracts can no longer be renewed, and pressure to exclude the company spreads to the product lineups of other private companies that do business with it. Because the reputational damage often outweighs the revenue loss, the designation itself frequently becomes the subject of lawsuits.

For companies, this means a single designation can shake an entire company's services. That's why it's commonly recommended in practice not to lock an entire system into one supplier, but to keep the option open to switch to another company's products in advance.

A common misunderstanding is that this isn't just media wording but a legally binding official government designation. That means if a court finds the designation lacks sufficient grounds, the action itself can be struck down.
