Spectrum-X

A networking technology from NVIDIA that links multiple GPUs together like a single cluster, letting them exchange data quickly.

In plain words

Spectrum-X is a networking system that ties multiple GPUs together so they can work as one machine. Rather than being a GPU itself, think of it as the technology that widens the 'roads' data travels on between GPUs.

Even if several chefs can each chop ingredients quickly, if the passage for passing ingredients between them is narrow, the whole kitchen only moves as fast as that passage allows. AI infrastructure works similarly. You can buy and connect thousands of GPUs, but if the connections carrying computed results between them are slow, adding more GPUs won't give you a proportional speed increase. Spectrum-X improves this connective layer by enhancing Ethernet, an existing networking approach, to reduce that bottleneck.

That's why Spectrum-X never shows up on its own — it always appears alongside news about building large-scale GPU clusters. What determines inference and training speed isn't just how many GPUs you've gathered, but how well those GPUs actually cooperate with each other.

How it shows up in the news

In articles, it's mentioned alongside GPU names, as in "a configuration combining a dedicated B300 cluster with Spectrum-X networking." A common point of confusion here is mistaking Spectrum-X for a type of GPU — but it isn't a GPU at all. It's the networking technology that connects GPUs. In other words, the B300 is the component that does the computing, while Spectrum-X is the communication method that carries those computed results between GPUs.
