Self-Evolution

self-evolution

The process by which an AI system revises its own performance or way of operating without human intervention.

In plain words

Self-evolution refers to an AI system improving its own performance or way of operating on its own, without going through human hands.

Think of it like a student who makes their own error notebook after taking a test. At first, they just correct wrong answers. But as this goes further, they start changing their whole study method, and eventually they even redefine for themselves what counts as "doing well." Up to the point of fixing answers, it's easy for a human to check the work. But once the system starts touching the standards used for judgment itself, it becomes hard for humans to verify whether the outcome has actually improved.

That's why researchers today look at how "deep" this change goes. Whether it's a small tweak to the task at hand or a rewrite of the very criteria used for future judgments changes how much the result can be trusted. This concept keeps coming up partly because of the worry that once AI passes the point of improving itself, its rate of progress could move beyond human control.

How it shows up in the news

In articles, it appears as "recursive self-improvement (RSI)" or "self-evolving agents." For example, in a sentence like "Brin is pushing resources toward recursive self-improvement." People often picture self-evolution as a dramatic leap where AI suddenly jumps to superintelligence, but the actual discussion is much more concrete. It ranges from shallow levels, like rewriting prompts or organizing memory, to deep levels that change the underlying judgment criteria themselves, and the evidence required differs depending on which level is involved.
