Riemann zeta function
A mathematical function tied to the distribution of prime numbers, whose zeros are at the center of the Riemann Hypothesis, an unsolved problem for over 160 years.
In plain words
The Riemann zeta function is a mathematical function that describes how the prime numbers (2, 3, 5, 7…) are spaced out along a number line. When you plug certain numbers into this function, there are points where the result comes out to exactly zero, and the locations of these points are believed to hold the key to unlocking the secrets of prime number distribution.
It's a bit like tuning a radio and searching for the exact spots where the signal cuts out completely. In 1859, mathematician Bernhard Riemann conjectured that all these "signal-cutting" points line up perfectly along one particular line. That conjecture is the Riemann Hypothesis. Computers have checked trillions of these points and never found an exception, but no one has ever proven that this holds true for all infinitely many of them.
Recently, news that AI labs have started tackling this 160-year-old problem head-on has drawn attention. They haven't proven the hypothesis itself, but they've reported partial progress, such as slightly raising the proportion of zeros confirmed to lie on that line without exception. What makes this notable is that AI is starting to claim results at the actual frontier of research, going beyond simply verifying proofs that humans have already written.
How it shows up in the news
In articles, it shows up in phrases like "raised the lower bound on the proportion of zeros of the Riemann zeta function satisfying the hypothesis." A common point of confusion: this does not mean the Riemann Hypothesis has been proven. It means only a small amount of progress has been made on a problem that remains unsolved. There's a long distance between a single tweet and recognition from the academic community after peer review.
