A multi-chip approach means an AI company doesn't buy its computer chips from just one source, but uses a combination of chips it designs itself and chips made by other companies. This reduces the risk of supply running out or prices spiking, while also letting the restaurant grow vegetables tailored exactly to its own cooking.

Most AI companies today depend heavily on chips from one particular company. Because demand has exploded and supply is chronically tight, relying on a single source can be risky. So some companies are building their own chip design teams while stating that they won't fully abandon the other companies' chips they've been using — they'll keep using both in parallel. This spreads out supply risk while also allowing them to experiment with optimizing chips specifically for their own AI models.

News reports say "Anthropic will continue to maintain a multi-chip approach going forward." This doesn't mean a declaration that it will use only its own chips — rather, it means that even as it builds a new in-house chip development team, it will keep using the other companies' hardware it has relied on alongside it. It's easy to mistake this for a full switch to in-house chips, but in reality it's closer to a strategy of spreading risk and keeping options open.
