Mobility-Embedded POIs

Mobility-Embedded POIs (ME-POIs) are a new way of representing places that layers real human coming-and-going patterns on top of the information you'd normally see on a map. A cafe's listing usually shows just a category ("cafe") and an address, but it doesn't tell you that the place is packed at 7am and empty by 3pm. ME-POIs try to fill exactly that gap—the space between a place's official identity on paper and the actual rhythm of life happening there.

If ordinary place data is like a resume, ME-POIs are more like a diary of how someone actually spends their day. Arrival times, how long people stay, and nearby movement patterns are all gathered and turned into a numeric signature that captures each place's unique time-of-day rhythm. So even two "cafes" can end up with completely different signatures depending on whether they're a morning spot or an evening spot—and a language model can use these signatures to make better guesses about peak hours or typical customers, even for places it has never seen before.

Articles describe it along the lines of: "ME-POIs flip this approach around, turning movement patterns themselves into the input that defines a place." The easy misconception here is that this isn't just a "tells you when it's busy" feature. Unlike the live congestion indicators you see in map apps, ME-POIs is more of a research framework that changes the underlying data used to represent a place in the first place.
