MCP Server

An MCP Server is a connector that lets AI talk to the outside world, like files, databases, or other programs. AI itself is great at reading and writing text, but it can't directly open a file on your computer or pull information from a company database on its own. That's where an MCP Server steps in, acting as a bridge between what the AI wants to do and what the actual program can do.

Think of it like a power adapter you use when traveling abroad. No matter how great your laptop is, you can't plug it in if the outlet shape is different in that country. An MCP Server works the same way—it sits in between, translating the AI's request into a form the program can understand.

In coding tools, this is how AI gets new abilities added one at a time. For example, if you want a code-writing tool to check a GitHub repository or search internal company documents, you simply connect the MCP Server that handles that specific function.

Articles use it like this: "The plugin feature lets you bundle skills, subagents, hooks, MCP Servers, and some settings together and deploy them to your whole team." It's worth knowing that MCP Server isn't a feature exclusive to Claude Code—it's one of the common ways various AI tools connect to external programs.
