Makefile

A Makefile is a configuration file that lets you skip manually running every task needed to finish a program. You just write down the goal and the rules, and the system handles the rest of the process in order.

Think of it like a recipe. A recipe only states 'the finished dish should look like this' and rules like 'mixing ingredient A and B gives you C' — it doesn't specify exactly when to turn on the heat or how long to stir, since the cook (the system) figures that out. Developers only need to define the conditions for the final result; they don't have to spell out every intermediate step each time.

A key feature of this approach is that you can trace the result backward. By following the rules one by one, the path that produced the final output becomes clear. Because you only set the goal and leave the process to the system, this is often compared to how AI is used today.

In an interview, Martin Casado compared the current experience of using AI to a Makefile, explaining it as "a way where you define what the final output should look like, and the system takes care of the rest of the process." But the difference he emphasized is that with a Makefile, you can trace the process backward from the result, whereas with AI, the goal is defined but the path to it and the time it takes are hard to trace clearly. In other words, this isn't saying a Makefile itself is AI technology — it's an analogy that borrows the familiar developer experience of "just state the goal and the rest takes care of itself" to explain AI's unfamiliar nature.
