GenAI.mil is a dedicated gateway that lets people at the U.S. Department of Defense use commercial AI chatbots safely. When ordinary users type into popular AI chatbots, that input can be sent to the company's servers, logged, or used to improve the service — but Defense Department staff can't handle work documents or sensitive material that way. GenAI.mil works like a secure entry point that gives Defense personnel access to AI models from multiple companies without those risks.

Rather than being a single company's service, the portal brings together AI models from several vendors in one place. It launched first with Google's Gemini, and was later joined by OpenAI's ChatGPT Mil and xAI's Grok for Government. Anthropic's Claude, however, has not joined the portal due to disagreements with the Department of Defense over safeguards.

According to Department of Defense announcements, more than 1.7 million of the roughly 3 million civilian and military personnel have already signed up for GenAI.mil — so it's easiest to think of it as an internal app store where products from multiple companies sit side by side on one portal.
