Fable 5
Anthropic's largest and most expensive flagship AI model, which outperformed cheaper models but saw lower adoption
In plain words
Fable 5 is the priciest, highest-end model in Anthropic's lineup. Within the company's own product range, it's like the fully loaded, top-trim version of a car — the best performer, but also the most expensive to use.
The problem is that not many people actually bought this top trim. In its first month, Fable 5 accounted for only a tiny fraction of Anthropic's total sales and revenue. Mid-tier models one level down sold far more. Being expensive didn't automatically mean being popular — many businesses preferred cheaper, 'good enough' models instead.
Anthropic later released a new model, Claude Opus 5, priced at about half of what Fable 5 cost. In other words, having built a flagship model, the company then entered a price competition with a cheaper one — a move also tied to low-cost Chinese models closing the performance gap.
How it shows up in the news
It often appears as a benchmark for comparing prices with other models, as in "Claude Opus 5 launched at half the price of the flagship Fable 5." A common misconception is that Fable 5 is the best-selling model — in fact, articles tend to emphasize that despite its high price, actual adoption by businesses was low.
