A conversational AI model is an AI program that generates a response whenever you ask it something the way you'd talk to a person. Think of it less like a call-center agent reciting a memorized manual, and more like something that has already read enormous amounts of text and, drawing on what it learned, composes an appropriate sentence on the spot.

For example, Grok, usable inside X, and the widely known ChatGPT both work this way. When a user types a question, the model looks at the prior conversation context and generates a natural-sounding reply that fits what comes next. This is an entirely different kind of technology from a robot that moves a physical body — a conversational AI model by itself is pure software with no hands or feet.

That said, sounding natural doesn't mean it's always accurate. It can plausibly invent things that aren't true (this is called hallucination), or it can be tricked by malicious instructions into leaking personal information, revealing security vulnerabilities. That's why ongoing safety testing is needed before deploying these models in real services.

In articles, you'll see phrasing like "Grok is a conversational AI model built by xAI, and it can be called up directly within the X platform." Contrary to a common misconception, a conversational AI model isn't a physical machine like a robot — it's simply software that answers questions through text. Combining it with a robot like Optimus would require separate technical integration work, and this kind of specific method isn't described in this article either.

Open a conversational AI service and try a short question like this:

"Recommend three indoor activities for a nice weather day."

After getting an answer, follow up with "Explain the second recommendation in more detail" and see whether it remembers the earlier conversation and continues from there. This ability to maintain context across a conversation is the core feature of a conversational AI model.
